On my 1984 4Runner (22R Carb), either the AC Compressor or Air Pump sounds like it is losing a bearing. Is there any harm in disconnecting the belt that drives both? (The AC has not worked for over a decade, so I will not miss it.) Does one expect the smog system to still be "working" after 26 years?

If that's the only two things the belt drives, I'd say no problem if you don't have to worry about emissions testing.
I'd go look at my 84 to see, but it's like 10 degrees out there.
