Painting the 2009 XRS stock wheels

As part of my mission to black out my '09 XRS, I've been thinking about getting black rims. I really don't want to spend extra money just to get black rims so I've been thinking of painting them...not permanently.

Ever since I've discovered Plasti-dip spray, I've wondered if this can be pulled off and if it will come out nice. I know there are vids out there of people showing plasti-dipped wheels, but I've never seen anyone do XRS wheels.

I'm not looking for the "flat" look. I'm thinking semi-gloss, so I plan to first, use plasti-dip spray, then on top of that semi gloss black paint.

Has anyone ever done this? I'm waiting for Spring/Summer to actually experiment with this. Any input is appreciated.

i think black rims look good only when its fairly glossy or has a colored lip...

otherwise, from far away, it just looks like your on steelies

it really depends on the spoke pattern of your wheel too... i think it will look okay on the XRS rims

I say go for it. So many buy after-market, I think you can make them look great, and be unique at the same time. Maybe throw in a bit of something to set it apart from the steelie end of things...

i say do it. even from far away my stock S wheels painted satin black dont look like steelies.

and the XRS wheels would look pretty nice.

ive seen someone paint them flat black and they looked kinda weird.

and ive seen them painted gloss black but when the sidewalls of the tire are dirty they look weird also.

IMO im not a fan of the polished/chromed/silver lip

but its your car :] pics if done!

Did you get your wheels professionally painted or did you paint them yourself? Are your led's just strips that you put outside of the headlights or are they inside?

I paint alot of things including bike frames and such so i painted them myself. sanded, 2 coats primer, 3 coats paint. no gloss and they have stood up great for 6 plus months even washing. only 1 chip from the people at discount who went crazy with the impact wrench when i got a flat.

and no these are just the led strips but not from autozone. check out my album as i did have those in the beginning. honestly my car is way too new to be removing, melting, and prying open my headlight housing IMO. and i dont like the aftermarket projector headlights they have. the angel eyes that come on them are kinda small.

I like how they turned out. Did you paint them with regular spray paint?

Good to hear it's holding up ok. I'm thinking of putting on a couple of layers of plastidip then a few coats of maybe gloss black, that way I can just peel it off if I don't like the way it looks. I'm just worried about curb rashes especially with the plastidip. I'm a little nervous thinking about doing it but it's something I've been wanting to do.

Than don't hit any curbs. I never have an issue with hitting curbs so it always amazes me when I see curb rash on a wheel. When I just sold my Previa wheels they had no curb rash & I owned them for 10 years!

yeah USUALLY/HOPEFULLY people learn how to parallel park when they take that "driving" test when they're 16 but i always tend to see otherwise. :[ haha

ALMOST every single wheel for sale on craigslist....has "slight curb rash" ugh!

that will definitely mess up the plasti dip but practice makes perfect

Could anyone put white XRS wheels on a silver rolla? My shoopin'(photoshop) skills are none to great..

Always been curious, or maybe some white TC rims? I'm set on getting white rims, but there are like none for sale in town!!!
