Build quality between 4th & 3rd Gen.

I've owned my 97 4Runner since 2003 and have been very impressed with quality of construction and reliabilty. Since third generation 4runners with low mileage are getting harder and harder to find, I thought I would look into a used 4th generation. For those that have owned both, would you describe 4th gen's as being equal in quality to their 3rd gen predecessors.

We have an '08, purchased new after 5 years with an '02 model. Although the '08 is obviously newer, neither have/were ever in the shop for other than normal maintenance items. Materials and fit/finish seem equal to me.

I went from a 00 to an 08 and I like the 08 a lot better. As far as build quality I have had no problems so far other then the display on the radio was faulty and Toyota put in a new radio. I always maintain my vehicles as recommended. I will say on the 00 little things that bothered me the 08 has resolved those.

With that in mind you always have to be vigilant when buying a used car and by a car with a good record a maintience.

I think we also have to consider that the 4th gen 4runner are more high tech, gadgets, electronics, etc, so there is basically more things to go wrong. 3rd gen are simpler in comparison.

I don't know if this is a good comparison but if you have a basic Corolla (or even a loaded Corolla), it is more likely the Corolla will be more reliable than even a newer Lexus. Just my opinion.
